Denver police say officers wounded a man on an apartment balcony after they mistakenly thought he had opened fire.
The shooting happened downtown on Sunday night.
Denver police said they got numerous calls at 10:17 p.m. about a man with a gun on a balcony at 20th and Arapahoe streets. The callers said the gun appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun and that the man was pointing it at people.
Denver police commander Ron Saunier said when officers arrived they ordered the man on the third floor balcony to drop the gun and show his hands, but the man refused.
Saunier said one officer opened fire, but when the bullet ricocheted, a second officer thought the suspect was firing and that officer fired at the suspect.
The suspect was shot in the arm and was taken to the hospital, Saunier said.
Saunier said officers recovered several weapons from the man's residence, but no live gun was found. Saunier said police believe the gun the man was holding was not a sawed-off shotgun, but rather a modified BB gun.
