More Denver officers to begin using body cameras

The Denver Police Department is set to begin outfitting more than 800 police officers with body cameras.

The Denver Postreports that officers will begin wearing the devices on Thursday. The move comes after state legislators hosted a discussion on race, policing and justice on Tuesday attended by members of law enforcement from across the state.

As officers get used to the new cameras, Denver police deputy chief Matt Murray says the department is trying to determine how it will handle open records requests for footage recorded by the devices. He says reviewing footage of crimes and use of force incidents will require a lot of manpower.

Each camera costs between $400 and $600, with footage storage being the most expensive piece of using them.

Some officers began wearing cameras in June 2014 as part of a pilot project.

Legislators are expected to meet this year to discuss statewide recommendations for policies and procedures on body cameras.
