Water bills are going up for Denver residents. Late Monday night, the Denver City Council passed an increase in annual storm and sanitary sewer rates.
While it's only an average of about $23 per year (around $2 per month), the increase happens over the course of five years, meaning the average customer will see an increase of about $115 per year at the end.
The money raised will be used for storm drainage improvements, and "allow the city to keep pace with the annual sanitary system cost increases," according to a news release from Denver Public Works.
The rate increase is expected to raise millions of dollars for the city to do that work, as well as partially fund the "Platte to Park Hill Stormwater Systems program" which is meant to increase drainage and prevent flooding.
Dozens of upset residents came out to speak against the increase at the City Council meeting, but the hike was passed in an 8-3 vote.
Customers should expect to be notified of the increase in their next water bill.
