A man robbed at gunpoint near an ATM early Monday morning decided to fight back and grabbed the suspect's gun.
The man was with his girlfriend depositing money at a Wells Fargo ATM at East Hampden Avenue and Yosemite Street around 2:30 a.m.
The couple said the robbers drove up in a Jeep and initially asked them for directions and drove away. A short time later, the men returned with a gun and an ax.
"They pulled in front of my car, and then both of them got out of their respective sides, came to our windows and robbed us at gunpoint," Brittanee Dixon said. "They took my phone, my entire purse, and took (my boyfriend's) wallet."
Dixon said that's when her boyfriend went after the men.
"As soon as I saw them take off with the rest of our stuff, I jumped out of the car and grabbed the gun," said Andrew Fry. "I grabbed the top of the gun, and he shot and blew out his own window and they jumped in the car and took off."
Fry said part of the reason he grabbed for the gun is that it didn't look like a real weapon.
Denver Police said the suspects are white or Hispanic men in their 20s. Fry and Dixon said the robbers' Jeep was blue or grey and an older model. They said it was the front passenger window that was shot out.
