DENVER – Besides scary costumes, the most frightening part of Halloween could be drivers who do not plan ahead and ultimately drive impaired.
Halloween weekend has a reputation as one of the most alcohol-fueled days of the year. That is why more Troopers and other law enforcement officials will join drivers on Colorado roads to make sure people are celebrating responsibly.
Colorado’s Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported 250 people were arrested for driving under the influence last Halloween weekend -- that number was down from the 329 arrested in 2014.
“It may differ from year to year depending on where Halloween actually falls. Weather can sometimes play a factor, or what time trick-or-treating can be,” said Trooper Josh Lewis.
Like many people behind the effort to rid our roads of drunk drivers, Trooper Lewis said CSP will push for zero fatalities and show zero tolerance for those under the influence.
Troopers carried out an operation on Saturday afternoon. Patrol cars were placed strategically along 470, with another trooper driving a blue semi-truck.
Trooper Lewis said, “To the normal person driving down the roadway, maybe unsuspecting and not realizing that there is a trooper observing driving behavior. In particular, we were looking for texting and driving.”
Lewis said safety is always a shared responsibility. He added, “Ultimately, it’s a matter of cooperating with everybody.”
