Long lines are expected at DIA over Memorial Day

Looking to travel by air during Memorial Day weekend? You better arrive earlier than usual.

About 1 million passengers are expected to in and out of Denver International Airport from May 24 - May 30, according to spokesman Heath Montgomery. That's about 2 percent more than the same time last year, he said.

Montgomery adds Thursday and Friday are expected to be the busiest days.

At the checkpoint, Thursday through Tuesday will be busy, with peak times between  5 -10 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

But not everything is bad news.

New legislation proposed by Senator Cory Gardner could help airports across the country deal with long security lines.

Under the legislation by the Colorado Republican, airports will get assistance in purchasing new high-tech equipment that could help speed up Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, including at Denver International Airport (DEN). Pilot programs would be established at DEN and more than 20 airports nationwide.

"This is something airports can take into their own hands. Our legislation will help them do that. It will expedite the purchase and transfer of security equipment that can be used, funded by the airport, in conjunction with TSA programs,” said Sen. Gardner in an interview with Denver7’s Marc Stewart.

The legislation may be introduced as soon as this summer.
