DENVER -- A mechanical issue caused an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to be diverted to Denver International Airport Sunday afternoon, a DIA spokesperson confirmed with Denver7.

American Airlines flight 569 took off from LAX at around 8:37 a.m. Pacific Time, and was on its way to the city of Toronto in Canada when a mechanical issue caused it to be diverted to DIA. The flight landed in Denver at 11:42 a.m., according to FlightAware.com.

Everyone is safe.

"American Airlines flight 569 from Los Angeles (LAX) to Toronto (YYZ), an Airbus 319 aircraft, diverted to Denver due to reports of an odor onboard, a statement from American Airlines reads. "The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate without further incident. Our maintenance personnel are investigating the cause of the odor at this time."

A passenger on the flight said crews told travelers everyone had to de-board the plane. "Smoke started around one of the center emergency exits," George Sully told Denver7.

There were 100 passengers and a crew of five onboard, an American Airlines spokesperson also said in the release.

Crews are working to get passengers onto the next flight as soon as possible.
