DENVER -- A Lakewood man says he was robbed and attacked while walking along the 16th St. Mall last Saturday night.
The man, who didn’t want to be identified, says all he remembers is walking toward the State Capitol and then waking up at the hospital the next morning.
“I don’t know how people can be that selfish enough to go to some random person and just take their money,” he said.
He now has fractures to his jaw, eye socket and cheekbone.
Police told him he was missing his wallet and cell phone when paramedics found him near 16th St. and Court.
“I got my jaw broken for 20 dollars,” he said.
This is just one of a handful of recent violent attacks on the 16th St. Mall. Earlier this summer, millions watched an online video showing a man attacking people along 16th St. with a pipe.
Denver police later found and arrested him.
Earlier this week, a man recorded a fight at the mall where one person was beaten by a group of people.
Police tell Denver7 the man attacked chose not to file a report which they need in order to make an arrest.
Speaking from his home in Lakewood, the man tells Denver7 he thinks more needs to be done to keep people safe at the mall.
“I don’t think there’s enough people on the ground,” he said.
Although he thinks safety involves more than just police effort.
“I’d just like to see like better attitudes in people cause this is Colorado,” he said, “it’s supposed to be one of the friendliest states.”
Denver police say so far they've made fewer arrests this year at the Mall than the same time last year.
Police increased their patrols at the mall and the Downtown Denver Partnership has hired extra private security officers to patrol the area beginning later this month.
