DENVER – While you were out hiking our beautiful state parks, a record number of people were tying the knot in Denver, according to numbers released by the Denver Office of the Clerk and Recorder.

A record-breaking 8,024 couples got hitched in 2016, according to Mica Ward, a spokesperson for the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s Office. That’s 685 more couples married than in 2015 -- an 8.91 percent increase!

“We expected to break 2015’s record of 7,339 marriages but not by this much,” said Clerk Debra Johnson. “It’s great to be a small part of so much love and happiness each day.”

It’s not surprise, Ward said in a press release, as marriages in the Mile High City have been on the rise since 2007. The biggest percentage increase? That would be in 2014, when Colorado legalized same-sex marriage.

For nine of the past 12 years, August has been the business month for marriages, numbers show.

Some other statistics:

  • 36 marriage licenses were issued per working day in 2016
  • 980 marriages licenses were issued in August alone
  • There were a total of 22 civil unions in 2016 and 34 percent of marriage applications were filled out online before coming into the office.

If you’re looking to get married soon, you and your special someone are encouraged to apply online before coming into the office in order to save time at
