DENVER – Nine hundred children in the Denver metro area are in danger of not getting a Christmas gift this year, according to a local nonprofit that is turning to the community for help.
Santa’s Elves, started by Deborah Sherman in 2010, is part of the nonprofit Kids Giving 365.
The project began as a simple gesture so she could show her young son the meaning of giving to others in need.
"I really wanted him to know what it’s like to give to others and I wanted him to be compassionate and kind and have a good heart,” said Sherman.
The program works by pairing kids across Colorado with others who are less fortunate. The kids build the gifts from their wish list and give those presents to them face-to-face, according to Diana White, a spokesperson for Santa’s Elves.
In 2016, the nonprofit said they were able to help more than 2,000 children living in poverty.
However, this year, not enough “elves” have been recruited to help with the cause.
The program is looking for families or companies to adopt a family from the Denver Housing Authority by Friday, Dec. 2.
