Centennial neighborhood takes stand against emergency room proposal

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – The City of Centennial is one step closer to approving a new emergency room facility – but neighbors in that area don’t want it in their backyard.

One person who lives in the area created a petition against the facility that could be built at the intersection of Dry Creek Road and Colorado Boulevard.

Marcelo Corpuz, the man who created the petition, said he has one goal.

“I just want to have a public hearing on the proposal before the city votes on it,” Corpuz said.

Centennial City Council will vote whether to approve the proposal on Monday.

As of Thursday, the petition Corpuz created has 1,152 signatures.

He told Denver7 there are several reasons why him and his neighbors are opposing the proposal.

“This area is just a terrible place to put an emergency room,” Corpuz said. “There will be sirens blaring and coming at full speed, in this very busy intersection. It could put residents in jeopardy because of the increased traffic. This is just something that nobody needs particularly when there’s health care options abundant in the Centennial area.”

On Oct. 11, Planning and Zoning Commission held a meeting on the proposal.

That commission approved the plan by a vote of 6-1. The commission did not require rezoning because that area has a general commercial zoning designation. City council will have the final vote at its Nov. 13 meeting.

If the proposal is approved, the center will open in 2018.

According to a city spokesperson, a study was done about traffic in that area. The spokesperson said the study showed an emergency facility would not be problematic for traffic.
