CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- A 16-year-old is facing serious charges after the discovery of explosive and dangerous chemicals inside a Castle Rock home.
The two teens initially arrested after an unrelated incident have been charged by the 18th Judicial District, a spokesperson confirmed with Denver7.
One 16-year-old is charged with possession of an explosive or incendiary device and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The teen's bond was set at $1 million. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 15. said.
The other teenager is charged with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The teen's bond has been set at $50,000 and a hearing is scheduled for Nov. 10, according to Vikki Migoya, spokeswoman for the 18th Judicial District District Attorney's Office.
Castle Rock Police arrested the two 16-year-olds early Monday. When police went to notify the parents of one of the teens, they discovered suspicious chemicals inside the home.
Thirty or so homes were evacuated as police, fire, hazmat crews, the FBI and ATF assessed the situation. A Douglas County bomb squad detonated two explosive devices behind the home located in the 400 block of West Prestwick Way in Castle Rock.
The evacuated families were allowed to return to the Plum Creek neighborhood Tuesday morning. The home where the chemicals and explosives were found was condemned by the fire department.
Chemicals found inside the home could have caused a deadly explosion if officers had not stumbled upon them, authorities said. Hazmat crews found more than 20 containers of chemicals inside the house and on the back porch. Investigators had yet to identify the chemicals.
Authorities added one of the teens had an extensive knowledge of chemicals. They have not discussed any motives related to to case.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigated a possible social media threat earlier Monday, but say that threat is not linked to the explosives investigation.
