BRIGHTON, Colo. – Police said a man reportedly impersonated a Brighton officer and entered an older resident's home, claiming he was investigating suspicious noises, officials said.

The incident happened this past week, Brighton police posted on Facebook.

The resident said the man identified himself as "Captain Gallin" and said he needed to enter the home to investigate the noises, police said. The resident, believing the man was an officer, allowed him inside and he wandered around for a bit before leaving.

The man was wearing dark-color pants, and a khaki-color coat with patches on the sleeve, the resident reported.

Police want to remind the public that Brighton patrol officers would be wearing full police uniforms and driving marked police vehicles. Plain clothes detectives are required to carry badges and police ID cards.

Anyone who is unsure if someone is a police officer should contact police dispatch by calling 911 or 303-288-1535, police said.
