Cause of death in Eldora Mountain Ski Resort remains ruled ‘undetermined'

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. – After eight months of investigating how a Denver man whose severed foot was found inside a boot at Eldora Ski Mountain Resort died, the Boulder County Coroner ruled Thursday the cause was "undetermined."

Ervin Mettler’s severed foot was found in a boot on June 1, 2016. About a month later, more of his skeletal remains were discovered scattered over a small area at the resort.

It is unknown how long the remains were on the hillside, but it appeared to be at least several months, as the remains were well-weathered.

Officials believe Mettler was camping.
