Baby cut from womb: Attorney weighs in on trial

A Denver attorney who specializes in criminal cases tells Denver7 Michelle Wilkins' testimony is crucial for the state’s case against Dynel Lane, the woman accused of attacking her and taking her unborn baby from her womb after she responded to a Craigslist ad.

David Beller said Wilkins served as an extremely effective witness as she took the stand on Wednesday morning.

“The fact that she remembers all the details,” he said, “it’s clearly very emotional, but she’s able to get those details out and have the jury hear and understand what it is she is going through."

Wilkins calmly described the details she remembers from nearly a year ago when she says Lane hit her over the head with an object before taking her baby from her womb.

“All of these details and all of these examples are all intended to show that Ms. Lane knew what she was doing at the time and actually thought about it prior to the act actually occurring,” he said.

Lane’s defense attorney kept her cross examination short, limiting it to five minutes and asking about many of the details the prosecutors asked.

“The defense is going to be focusing on the very detailed specifics of what actually occurred because they are ultimately arguing in the closing argument that this was a very sudden and very immediate decision,” he said.
