More than 100 people living at the Denver Meadows RV Park found they have two years to move out, as owners look to rezone the property just feet away from the future Aurora light rail line.
Guadalupe Mancera purchased her trailer at the park 14 years ago. She says she won’t be able to move the trailer if she has to move.
“We’re not one family, not two families,” she said, “we’re 100 families who need the city and community’s support.”
Owners of the park requested to rezone the property west of I-225 last week for high density housing and commercial property before the Aurora Planning and Zoning Commission.
After hearing from the residents who spoke out at the meeting, the commission voted against the rezoning request after a 3-2 vote.
A spokesperson for the city of Aurora tells Denver7 that members of the full city council will reconsider the rezoning at a meeting later in the summer.
“We’re going to fight until the end,” said Maria Dolores Chavez, who purchased her home last year.
Shawn Lustigman, one of the owners of the property, spoke to Denver7 over the phone since he was out of town.
He said they have been trying to sell the property for years now and think it’s fair to give their residents two years notice.
“Why are they complaining?” he said.
He’ll be holding a community meeting on June 7 with residents and said he’ll discuss financial aid options during the meeting.
But Chavez said the manager at the complex hasn’t made living there easy and has been using tactics like towing cars and charging $100 for guests as a way to get them to leave.
“I’ve talked with other families here and I’ve noticed I’m not the only one they’re harassing and pressuring,” she said.
