AURORA, Colo. – A blaze inside an Aurora home that killed a mother of six and injured four other people has claimed another life.
Janelle Vargas died in the Wednesday morning fire at a family home in Aurora.
Family members said her son, Gabriel Vargas, 33, ran into the house to save her. He was unsuccessful and sustained critical injuries in the process.
Gabriel’s brother, Tony, told Denver7’s Amanda del Castillo that the family made the decision to take Gabriel off life support at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
Tony said he is the oldest of Janelle’s six children. He wasn’t in Colorado during the incident, but drove from Iowa when he heard the news.
He called his younger brother a hero in life and after, “Not only did he try to save my mom, but with his passing, he’s actually a registered donor.”
Tony said going into the burning home was something Gabriel would’ve done for anyone. He described him as a brave man -- one who knew the consequences of his actions, but most likely didn’t care.
“It's just the type of person he was -- he didn't care if he was going to hurt himself, as long as he was helping anyone else,” said Tony.
He said the family created a GoFundMe page to honor his mother and brother. The family is asking for any help, as they lost everything in the fire.
Tony said his mother was a strong woman, someone who was always there for her children.
The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, at a home on the 12700 block of 7th Avenue in Aurora.
The deadly blaze is being blamed on an electrical malfunction. Aurora Fire investigators ruled the fire an accident.
