AURORA, Colo. -- A driver of a Dodge Dart trying to elude police crashed into an Aurora day care center Wednesday afternoon. Two children and an adult female employee were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened at the Bright Stars Child Care at 1155 South Havana Street. The driver of the Dodge was taken into custody and charges are pending.

Police said it started after a hit-and-run crash involving the driver of the Dodge Dart with Ohio plates. When an officer spotted the vehicle on South Havana Street, the driver took off.

The Dodge turned into the Havana Gardens Shopping Center, struck a parked car and careened into the day care located in the shopping center, according to police.

The owner of Bright Stars Childcare on Havana said the car crushed the area just three feet from where he was standing.

“I was scared. There are no words to describe [it]. People give us their children to take care of their children,” said Masroor Farooqi.

He said police immediately showed up and continued chasing the suspect as he tried to run away from the day care.

Farooqi also said the suspect was acting pretty strange.

“He came out and then he was sort of giving an explanation or apologizing or something like that. I don’t know what he was doing,” Farooqi said.

Some parents were horrified when she showed up to pick their children and saw the scene.

“Pulling up to see this smashed completely in and not knowing if your child is okay is a scary thing,” said Brandy Hinskton.

The suspect was quickly taken into custody and is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
