A 10-year-old boy died Friday night following a shooting near East Colfax Avenue in Aurora.

The shooting took place in the area of East 16th Avenue and Galena Street, the Aurora Police Department tweeted at around 10:45 p.m.

Neighbors called police at around 9:45 p.m. after hearing "commotion" in the Nordic Arms Apartments. Once fire and police got to the scene, they discovered the boy had died in a ground-level apartment, according to Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz.

Investigators were interviewing family members who were present during the incident to determine how the child was shot.

"We have a weapon recovered, but I can't say at this point if that is the actual weapon," Metz told Denver7 late Friday night.

Two people were being questioned in connection with the shooting, but no one was in custody.

"We don't feel, at this point in time, that the neighbors should be afraid of somebody out there that is doing something that they shouldn't be doing. Think we have everything pretty well contained and we're just trying to get some more information," Metz said.

Investigators were on scene throughout the night and thru-traffic was closed in front of the apartment building.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help the family with expenses.
