LYONS, Colo. -- The Boulder County Sheriff's Office issued an immediate tubing ban on the Saint Vrain River Saturday.

This means the Saint Vrain Creeks and River will be closed to tubing and single chamber flotation devices in the interest of public safety until conditions improve, Stg. Dave Booton with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The closure will encompass the North and South Saint Vrain Creeks and the Saint Vrain River from the western county line through the entire length of Boulder County.

There is a specific exemption for kayaks and white water canoes. Kayakers are encouraged to exercise caution and wear safety equipment, including a life jacket.

Booton said that as of Saturday, the Sain Vrain River was flowing at approximately 1,300 cubic feet per second (CFS); the volume at which Emergency Services can initiate a closure is at 1,200 CFS.

Violators will be charged a $50 fine.
