EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. -- The fire chief in Eagle County, and his wife, have been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $120,000 from the city of Sterling, prosecutors said.
The chief, Kurtis Vogel, was head of the Sterling Fire Department from 2009 to April 2016.
Vogel, and his wife, Hope, are being held without bond until they can be advised by a judge, prosecutors said.
The investigation started after the Sterling City Attorney and Sterling City Manager contacted the 13th Judicial District Attorney's Office about certain bookkeeping irregularities. They also discovered missing fire fighting equipment upon Vogel's departure in April, district attorney Brittny Lewton told Denver7.
Kurtis Vogel was arrested on suspicion of theft, attempt to influence a public servant, official misconduct and forgery. He has also been placed on leave, according an official with the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District.
Bill Kennedy is serving as Active Fire Chief at this time, the official said in a statement.
Authorities did not release the specific charges for Hope Vogel.
