WELD COUNTY, Colo. -- Alcohol is being considered a factor in a deadly crash after a bottle of vodka was found inside a vehicle that was going the wrong way on Highway 85 Saturday evening.
The crash between a Chevy S-10 pickup and a Mitsubishi sedan happened south of the town of Eaton at around 9:30 p.m., Colorado State Trooper Ben Simpson said.
The pickup was reportedly traveling south in the northbound lanes when the two cars crashed head-on, killing a male driver in the pickup and a female driver in the Mitsubishi.
"Both drivers were killed, basically immediately at impact," Simpson said. The bottle of vodka was found inside the pickup as officials investigated the scene.
Witnesses told an Eaton Police Department officer who was conducting an unrelated traffic stop that they saw the pickup going the wrong on the highway. The officer tried to reach the pickup in time to stop it, but by the time he reached the vehicle, the crash had already happened.
The male and female driver have not been identified.
