Denver City Council will elect a new president next Monday.
President Christopher Herndon will remain on council but will not be running for re-election.
Herndon began Monday's council meeting with the announcement. He held his young son as he explained the decision.
Council insiders tell Denver7 a change in leadership has been in the works since early this year.
At this time, it is unclear who will fill the role as council president. The next president will be elected at the July 18 council meeting.
Herndon represents District 11, covering Park Hill, Stapleton, and portions of East Colfax and Montbello. He was elected to council in May 2011. According to the city, Herndon was reelected as council president in July 2015.
