CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide in the 21500 block of East Powers Lane in Centennial.
An 18-year-old man was shot and killed outside his home around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies detained a 17-year-old suspect and said there is no threat to the community.
The victim was a student at Cherokee Trail High School, but investigators said the shooting was not school related.
The victim's identity has not been released. Authorities declined to share additional details surrounding the shooting citing an ongoing investigation.
This is the latest in a string of fatal shootings involving teens in Aurora and Arapahoe County over the last several months. Monday evening, a teen was shot and killed in the 4700 block of South Memphis Street in Aurora.
Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said during a briefing following the shooting that the recent surge of violence among young people illustrates a bigger societal problem that police can't solve alone.
"This is a societal problem, and we are now coming into summertime when it is heating up quick," Metz said. "And we are seeing violence all around our city; we're seeing violence all around our region."
Police have not said if any of the recent shootings in Aurora are connected.
