FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A 20-year-old man is in custody after police found an injured woman in a Fort Collins parking lot on Saturday. She later died at a hospital.

On Saturday around 11:03 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services received a report of an unconscious, injured woman in a parking lot at 525 E. Drake Road.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a woman with life-threatening injuries. She appeared to have been assaulted, police said. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she died.

During the investigation, police identified Stephen McNeil, 20, as a suspect. Police found him Sunday at noon and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into the Larimer County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, domestic violence, violation of a protection order and violation of bail bond conditions.

Police determined that McNeil and the woman knew each other.

No other details were available about their relationship.

The Larimer County Coroner will release the identity of the woman, and her cause and manner of death, at a later time.

Investigations Lt. Jeremy Yonce said a "heinous act of violence" killed the woman and changed the lives of her loved ones.

"We will continue working diligently to support her family and seek justice," Yonce said.
