GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. – A person was injured and the suspect in a barricade situation in Glenwood Springs was taken into custody following a nearly two-hour standoff Thursday, police said in a news release.
Police responded to reports of a shooting shortly before 11a.m. near the intersection of 10th Street and Riverview Drive. An officer had been called out to the area shortly beforehand and quickly responded back after the shots fired call, according to Glenwood Springs Police Chief Joseph Deras, who sent out an update on Friday afternoon.
Right as the officer arrived, a man later identified as Craig Allen Robbins, 44, fired shots at the officer, hitting his vehicle twice, including through the glove box.
At some point, a victim of a shooting was found nearby and taken to a hospital, where he remains on Friday. Many other law enforcement and emergency personnel responded.
One person was able to escape the barricaded situation, but a woman continued to be held against her will inside the home. According to Deras, Robbins fired more than 50 more rounds inside and outside the home.
Eventually, negotiators established communication with him and he surrendered around 12:40 p.m. Thursday. The woman inside the home was rescued and was safe, but police say she was so distraught she could not initially provide officers with a statement.
Inside the home, according to Deras, investigators found several handguns, a rifle and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition. Deras said officers found numerous bullet holes in nearby homes and a park.
"Several homes in teh neighborhood had bullets travel through their interior to include striking the box spring of a child's bed," Deras said. "Stray bullets were recovered from the Veltus park where a woman and small child were patronizing the park."
