Second arrest announced in Sunday triple shooting in downtown Denver

DENVER – Police announced Tuesday they had arrested a second man in connection to a triple shooting that happened early Sunday morning in downtown Denver.

Nickie Rico, 36, is being held for investigation on attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference and first-degree assault charges. He is the second man arrested in the shooting.

On Monday, police announced they had arrested 31-year-old Armando Durete for investigation on the same charges.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersections of 15th Ave. and Market Street. Two men and a woman had been shot, police said.

According to probable cause statements for both men’s arrests, Rico was one of those who had been shot. He was hit in the hand and leg and was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition, the probable cause statements say.

Police reviewed surveillance video and talked to witnesses, one of whom identified Durete as one of the alleged shooters. Surveillance video captured the shooting and showed a man believed to be Durete in a parking lot shooting a gun, which he stashed nearby afterward and which police later found.

Rico was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the same parking lot. According to the probable cause statement for his arrest, two guns were found close to Rico: one under the car he was found next to and one inside the car. Police wrote that the car was registered to him.

The probable cause statement says evidence suggests that Durete and Rico had gotten into a gun fight with another man across the street. After Rico was hit, according to the probable cause statement, video showed him get into the front seat of his car where they later found a bloody handgun.

When he was interviewed by police, Durete asked about Rico’s condition and told officers they were brothers. Rico declined to speak to police.

The two have not been formally charged, and the probable cause statements indicate police had taken at least one other person into custody for questioning, though police haven’t released any information about further arrests.

Denver police said they were not releasing booking photos for either man because witness interviews are still ongoing, as is the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP.
