Scammers pretending to be Xcel Energy employees targeting homes in Denver, Arapahoe Counties

Posted

DENVER – Officials with Xcel Energy are alerting customers of two men who are posing as employees in order to break into homes in Denver and Arapahoe Counties.

The men reportedly claim to be working for Xcel and ask to enter into people’s homes to check electrical or natural gas equipment. When they are denied, the men reportedly threaten to press charges.

“Unless there’s an emergency, we generally dispatch employees to your home only at your request to make repairs or check equipment,” Xcel Energy officials said in a statement.

They added that Xcel employees will always be in uniform and will have company badges on display. “Contractors who work for us will have either Xcel Energy or their own company identification,” they said.

Officials advise that you always ask for the work ID of Xcel employees before letting them in and if you’re still unsure of who they are, officials recommend you call them at 1-800-895-4999.

If these men come knocking at your door, you are asked to report them to the Denver Policed, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office or Xcel Energy Customer Care at 1-800-895-4999.
