BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – The reward for information leading to the person suspected of killing two young mountain goats near the summit of Quandary Peak last week has increased to $5,000, Colorado wildlife officials said Wednesday.

The two young male “billy” mountain goats were found a half-mile from the summit of one of the state’s most popular “14er” mountains on July 3. The two had been shot in the head with a pistol at close range, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesperson told Denver7 last week.

Officials have for the past week been looking to speak with anyone who was hiking on the trail on or around July 3.

A $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest or citation of a suspect in the case had initially been offered. But officials said Wednesday that extra donations have led to Colorado Operation Game Thief increasing the reward to $5,000.

The killing of the goats is a felony, and the suspect could face jail time and thousands in fines if they are caught and convicted.
