LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Lakewood police are looking for a stolen car with a Rottweiler inside.

The dog’s owner stopped at the 7-Eleven in the 9200 block of West Alameda Avenue early Sunday morning.  She was driving an unfamiliar rental car and left it unlocked, but left the key FOB inside. Minutes later, she left the store and discovered her vehicle and her dog, Sampson, were both missing.

“My heart is broken. Sampson is like another one of my kids. I’ve had him for just about six years. He’s by my side everywhere I go,” said owner Laurel Mintz.

“It’s horrible. I’m devastated. I just want Sampson to come home. I need him.  He is my protection,” she said. “I have small children and he’s part of our family.”

Police have tried to get surveillance footage from nearby businesses, but have so far had no luck.

Tonight, the police department is looking for a black Nissan Sentra with a Colorado plate: 290-QFF.

“My gut instinct tells me that he wouldn’t let a stranger in that vehicle,” said Mintz. “Maybe with treats or something, he might have been bribable. Or my worst fear is somebody had a weapon and harmed him.”

“My dog is irreplaceable to me.”

Mintz is offering a $1,000 reward. If you have any information, please call the Lakewood Police Department at 303-987-7111.
