MONUMENT, Colo. — Police arrested a convicted sex offender who they say tried to kidnap a woman at knifepoint at a King Soopers parking lot in Monument early Saturday morning.

Steven Weaver, 51, was booked into the El Paso County jail on charges of attempted first degree kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery, menacing, first degree criminal trespass, failure to register as a sex offender, and harassment.

Around 6 a.m., Monument police say Weaver tried to enter a car with a woman sitting inside, but the woman saw what he was attempting to do and locked the doors, preventing him from gaining entry.

At that point, the owner of the vehicle, who police say was returning a cart, walked back to the car and was confronted by a knife-wielding Weaver demanding a ride, according to a police release.

Police say a struggle ensued, and Weaver tried to stab the vehicle owner, an adult male, several times while the suspect made his way inside the occupied car. But the male owner pulled him out and Weaver fled on foot.

Weaver was found nearby and arrested. Police later discovered that Weaver is a convicted sex offender but had failed to register in Colorado.
