ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — An Elbert County man is recovering from a gunshot wound deputies say was inflicted upon him by his mother.
According to a media release from the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old James Mamich broke into his mother’s Elizabeth home Monday afternoon and physically assaulted her.
Fearing for her life, deputies say the woman shot Mamich during the assault. She then called 911 and told the operator she had just shot her son, the release read.
Mamich was transported to the hospital for treatment and released Thursday. He was taken into custody shortly after and is being held on numerous charges, including first-degree burglary, criminal mischief and assault.
The case is being reviewed by the district attorney, and no charges have been filed against the homeowner, according to the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.
