WESTMINSTER, Colo. – An off-duty police officer was injured by a man who was reportedly trying to drive away following a disturbance at a shopping center in Westminster early Thursday evening.

Two off-duty officers responded to the parking lot outside the Ross store at The Orchard Town Center located on W. 144th Ave. and Huron St. at around 7:30 p.m. on reports of a disturbance in the area.

When the officers tried to break up the dispute, a man allegedly got in a car and started driving away, hitting one of the off-duty offers. The other officer then fired his gun and hit the driver, said Westminster Police Departments spokeswoman Cheri Spottke.

The driver was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time, but he is expected to survive his injuries. The officer hit by the car had minor injuries, Spottke told Denver7.

Both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, while the officer-involved shooting is being investigated.
