EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. — A 19-year-old was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing a lone female runner in Avon.

Andrew Michael Young pleaded guilty on Feb. 25 to first-degree assault causing serious bodily injury in connection to stabbing the woman on a bike path behind the Westin Riverfront Resort on May 31, 2018.

“The horrific nature of this crime is overcome by the tremendous bravery exhibited by the survivor in recounting her nightmare to police and standing up to the defendant today in Court,” said 5th Judicial District Attorney Bruce Brown. “The Avon Police Department did an outstanding job in investigating this attack and making sure that the attacker will spend the next two decades behind bars so that harm cannot come to any innocent at his hands for years to come.”

The woman was running alone on May 31, 2018 around 6 a.m. when Young ran up behind her and passed her on the trail. She said she was alarmed, but continued running. Young then struck her with a knife. The woman had multiple wounds to her head and torso and was taken to a local hospital. Young was arrested at 9:53 a.m. that day.

She is still recovering from the attack.
