COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — An innocent bystander injured during an officer-involved shooting is suing the city of Colorado Springs and its county for at least $1 million.
The Gazette reports Thomas Villanueva was shot on Feb. 5 as authorities exchanged gunfire with a suspect.
His family says a bullet struck Villanueva's left shoulder, passed through his spinal cord and exited through his left lung.
Villanueva's lawyer filed a notice of claim in March.
The claim says the shooting left Villanueva with gunshot wounds throughout his body and other potential bodily injuries which are yet unknown.
Villanueva may also be paralyzed from the waist down.
The lawsuit seeks reimbursement for losses, "which continue to accumulated, and are "expected to exceed" $1 million.
