DENVER – A 25-year-old man was charged Thursday with the attempted murder of a Denver sheriff’s deputy for an alleged attack that happened Monday at the Denver jail.

Cether Watkins, 25, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree assault in the incident.

According to the Denver District Attorney’s Office, Watkins hit a deputy on the head with a plastic bin and choked the deputy. Other inmates stepped in to help the deputy, the prosecutor’s office said.

Watkins was in the Denver city jail awaiting his next court appearance on an aggravated robbery case stemming from an alleged armed robbery of the Starbucks on E. Hampden Ave. on Oct. 13.

In that case, he is charged with seven counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, one count of third-degree burglary and nine crime of violence sentence enhancers.

Watkins’ second advisement hearing in the attempted murder case is set for Oct. 29. He is then set to appear next in court on Nov. 6 in the aggravated robbery case for a preliminary hearing.
