LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Police have made an arrest in connection with a series of fires that happened in late April, including one at a barn that killed six horses.

Earnest Sunday Maynes, 37, faces more than a dozen charges that include first-degree and second-degree arson, as well as animal cruelty, according to court records.

West Metro Fire wrote late Sunday on its Facebook page that an arrest had “just been made” in connection to the four fires, which investigators believe were purposely lit in the early morning hours of April 28.

A West Metro Fire spokesperson confirmed that Maynes was arrested Sunday night, though he has had a warrant for his arrest since early May.

There were dumpster and tire fires lit near 4th and Sheridan that night; a barn fire lit in the 5400 block of West 3rd Ave., and a dumpster fire lit near 22nd Ave. and Sheridan.

Six horses were killed in the barn fire, which both property owners and fire investigators had called suspicious.

Court records indicate Maynes remains held on a $500,000 bond. He has two prior convictions on felony menacing charges and convictions on destruction of private property and petty theft, according to court records.
