Man arrested in connection to explosives found in Trinidad, including one that injured a person

TRINIDAD, Colo. — A Trinidad man is in custody in Las Animas County after police found two explosive devices, including one that had gone off and seriously injured a person.

On Monday morning around 1 a.m., the Trinidad Police Department responded to the 300 block of E. North Avenue after receiving a report of an explosion. When police arrived, they found a man with severe injuries. A companion told police they had been walking through a park lot when they both saw a package and his friend picked it up and continued walking. When he opened the package, there was an explosion, the friend told police.

The injured man was transported to a hospital and later transferred by Flight for Life. Updates on his current condition are not available.

Based on evidence and witness statements, police requested the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Pueblo Police Department Bomb Squad.

Trinidad police said they responded to a similar incident on Feb. 5 at a Walmart parking lot. No other details were available on this incident.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Trinidad police identified a suspect and located him.

Jonathon Ryan Armijo of Trinidad was taken into custody in connection to both incidents.

He was brought to the Las Animas County Jail on the following charges:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • Two counts of possession/use of an explosive device

Police are continuing to investigate both scenes and are questioning a second person of interest.

Police said they do not believe there is a danger to the public.
