Man arrested, accused of strangling, killing woman in Lakewood home, police say

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — One man has been arrested after a woman was found dead of suspected strangulation in a Lakewood home near Green Mountain.

On Dec. 29 at 2:45 p.m., officers with the Lakewood Police Department responded to a home along the 2100 block of S. Coors Circle for a report of a missing person.

Friends of a resident in the home had arrived at the home and told police a woman was dead inside.

Police said it appears the woman died of strangulation. She has been identified as 45-year-old Hilary Engel of Lakewood.

The following day, Dec. 30, authorities tracked a suspect to Trinidad, where he was taken into custody by Trinidad police.

He was identified as 51-year-old Karl Aaron Bemish. He's being held as the Las Animas County jail on a charge of first-degree murder and will be transported to the Jefferson County jail.

This is an on-going investigation and no other information was available.
