DENVER — Police have arrested a 26-year-old man who is accused ofbreaking into the Colorado State Capitol Building and damaging property inside in late January.
Elias Anthony Dominguez was arrested on Friday for second-degree burglary, according to an arrest warrant.
The burglary happened on Jan. 27 between 2:28-5:07 a.m., according to the warrant. Dominguez allegedly was captured on surveillance camera entering the building illegally through a faulty security door.
The main and second floor areas are decorated with statues, furniture, paintings and glass display cabinets.
Dominguez allegedly damaged several of those items. According to the warrant, he broke a chair and glass display containers, overturned two statues on the north side of the main level and was captured on camera throwing several items off a second-story balcony. He’s also accused of deploying a fire extinguisher on the south side of the main level.
He was injured during the burglary and multiple items were contaminated with his blood.
He was seen leaving on elevator surveillance, where he waved at the camera, according to the warrant. He left the building at 5:06 a.m.
Investigators said two bust sculptures were broken. Theartist of the busts, Emmanuel Martinez, told Denver7 it was a shame to see his artwork shattered on the floor. He said he still has the original clay, which could be turned into a mold and re-cast into a new bust.
Investigators also found a black jacket with a phone containing the name “Elias” in plain sight at the crime scene.
Two Crime Stoppers tips lead investigators to the Dominguez’s Facebook account, which helped them to positively identify the man. Police are waiting on results from DNA test.
