DENVER (AP) — A Colorado man accused of purposely crashing his car at 65-70 mph to kill his unrestrained 2-year-old son has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The Denver Post reports 30-year-old Nathan Weitzel entered his plea Thursday for the Aug. 21 crash in Centennial that left the boy with a concussion and a broken leg. Weitzel is facing several charges, including attempted first-degree murder and child abuse.
According to court documents, he told investigators he planned the crash because he didn't think he was man enough to raise a child. Investigators say he also told them he took his son to play in a park before the crash and thought of ways to kill him.
A call to the public defender's office, which is representing Weitzel, was not returned Thursday evening.
