STERLING, Colo. — An inmate housed at a Colorado Department of Corrections facility was shot after authorities say he tried to escape during a court appearance Wednesday afternoon.
According to a statement from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate, 29-year-old Brian Estrada was at the Logan County Justice Center around 2:30 p.m. when the escape attempt occurred. According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Estrada was scheduled for a criminal hearing.
He was shot by a DOC officer when he tried to escape, according to CBI, and was taken to Denver Health for treatment. The officer involved in the shooting is on standard paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
The sheriff’s release said the inmate is in custody receiving treatment for his wounds. His condition is unknown at this time. No other injuries were reported.
The courts were closed following the incident.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is handling the incident and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave per policy procedure.
