CARBONDALE, Colo. – A homeless man was killed after a hit-and-run in the town of Carbondale in Garfield County, the town’s police department chief said Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened late Saturday night near the intersection of Village Road and Dolores Way.

At the scene of the crash, officers found a longtime area homeless man lying on the ground. Officials said first responders performed CPR but could not save him. He was later pronounced dead at he scene.

“In years past, the same male had been struck twice before not far from this location under similar circumstances,” said Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling.

The coroner will perform an autopsy, toxicology exams and try to find the man’s relatives.

Officials said initial investigation suggests that this was an accident but are asking for any witnesses to come forward with any information they have about the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
