Driver, 18, shot after allegedly striking Pueblo officer with stolen car, fleeing

PUEBLO, Colo. — An 18-year-old was injured in an officer-involved shooting after he allegedly struck an officer with a car on Jan. 9.

Around 12:45 a.m. on Jan. 9, a Pueblo police officer was patrolling an area on the west side of the city when he spotted two vehicles parked in an alley along the 1100 block of W. 13th Street.

The officer stopped to investigate and discovered that a late-model Subaru was occupied by three people.

A black, late-model Volkswagen sedan was next to the Subaru. The driver of that car was standing near the front door of a residence. When the officer contacted the driver and people inside the Subaru, he discovered the latter was stolen, according to Pueblo police.

As additional officers arrived on scene, the driver of the Volkswagen got into the car. The officer rushed after the driver and tried to keep him from escaping, but the driver sped away down an alley.

The driver of the Subaru sped away in a different direction, striking a back-up officer who had just arrived on scene. The investigating officer fired at least one round at the driver, but the Subaru sped away and other officers started to pursue it.

The pursuit ended when the stolen Subaru crashed into a home at the corner of E. 9th Street and Norwood Avenue. Three people were taken into custody, including the driver who had been shot one time in the torso.

At least two firearms were found in the car.

The driver, 18-year-old Coda Hutton-Hayes, was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Volkswagen, 21-year-old Simon Eugene “Elijah” Gurule, Jr., was arrested some time later.

The officer who was struck by the Subaru was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
