DENVER — A Denver man was charged with first-degree murder after police say he shot and killed a woman who was attempting to talk to him.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office formally filed charges Wednesday against Elijah Lucero, 19, in connection with the September shooting death of 20-year-old Briseidy Jimenez-Ortega, whom prosecutors describe was an acquaintance of the Lucero.
On Friday Sept. 7, Denver police responded to the 3900 block of Bryant Street, near the intersection of Bryant and W. 39th Avenue, after receiving a report of a shooting. Jimenez-Ortega was shot and was transported to a hospital, where she later died.
According to a release from the DA’s office, the victim was allegedly attempting to see or speak with Lucero when he shot her and then ran off. Hewas arrested several weeks later after several people identified the suspect as Lucero, police said.
Prosecutors say Lucero also allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun earlier in the day, prior to the shooting incident. The girlfriend was with Jimenez-Ortega when the victim was shot.
Prosecutors have yet to establish a motive in the shooting.
Lucero is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for advisement.
