COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A woman and a gunman were found dead after police say the gunman opened fire at first responders at an apartment complex in Colorado Springs Monday night.

Just before 9 p.m., Colorado Springs Police officers, firefighters and paramedics responded to the complex at 3835 Village Road South on a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, authorities found two gunshot victims suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. While on scene, officers and paramedics took gunfire from a man in an upstairs unit. No responding officers or medical personnel were hit.

Colorado Springs Police say officers immediately secured the scene after they were targeted by the upstairs gunman and removed the two victims from the area. They were rushed to a local hospital.

An hours-long standoff soon ensued, and police warned area residents of the persistent danger via emergency notifications.

Around 3 a.m., a SWAT team broke into the upstairs unit and found the gunman and an unidentified woman dead from what police described as “apparent trauma.”

The circumstances surrounding the shooting aren't clear and a police investigation is still ongoing. The names of those involved have yet to be released.

Police say they are looking for a person who may have been in the shooter's unit at the time of the incident, however they say that person is not a suspect.
