LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A Colorado State Patrol Trooper sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a car as he responded to another crash in Lakewood Friday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m. in the area of S. Wadsworth Blvd. and Highway 285, according to the Colorado State Patrol, which tweeted the trooper had been hit while he was outside his patrol car. The driver who reportedly hit the trooper remained at the scene.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and sustained serious injuries but will be OK, CSP officials said.

"At this point, drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected," a spokesperson for the Lakewood Police Department told Denver7.

Officials warned drivers to avoid the area as one lane of traffic was getting through both northbound and southbound lanes of Wadsworth Blvd.

The trooper's injuries were upgraded to "moderate" and CSP officials said he was expected to be released from the hospital Friday night.

Lakewood Police is investigating the initial crash that the Trooper was responding to, as well as the crash involving the Trooper.
