GOLDEN, Colo. – A California man was charged Friday with transporting a “large amount” of fentanyl into Colorado, a spokesperson with the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Gladimir Jesus Gamez, 33, was charged with one count of possession with intent to sell fentanyl – over 225 grams, and one special offender county of introducing or importing into the state of Colorado – more than 14 grams, according to 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Pam Russell.

Gamez was stopped by a Colorado State Trooper on Feb. 20 as he traveled westbound on I-70 near 6th Ave in Jefferson County. An arrest affidavit in the case states Gamez consented to a search of his vehicle, bearing California license plates, which revealed three large bricks of suspected contraband.

A field test of the contraband tested positive for fentanyl with a gross weight of 3,387 grams, or 7.46 pounds, according to Russell.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) estimates the lethal dose of fentanyl to be 2 mg.

Gamez is being held at the Jefferson County jail on a $500,000 bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 20 at 9:30 a.m.
