ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. – An elementary school in Centennial was briefly put on a “security perimeter” Wednesday morning as police looked for a suspect involved in a morning pursuit.

A phone alert from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office sent out around 10 a.m. Wednesday said deputies were searching for a “possibly armed” car theft suspect who had last been seen near Red Hawk Ridge Elementary, which is just south of the intersection of E. Arapahoe Road and S. Parker Road.

Abbe Smith, a spokesperson for the Cherry Creek School District, said the exterior doors of the school were locked, but classes were ongoing as normal. By 11 a.m., the security perimeter had been lifted, Smith said.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said after the telephone notification was sent that "there has been no indication that the man we are looking for is armed."

The suspect was described as a white male with long brown hair. He was wearing all black clothing and a gray beanie, according to the sheriff’s office.

The telephone message told residents to call 911 if they see the man and to “stay inside until further notice.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Denver7 there was a pursuit involving a stolen Subaru shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday after a vehicle was stolen from near Cottonwood Drive and Jordan Road in Douglas County.

Spokeswoman Lauren LeKander said deputies pursued two stolen vehicles Wednesday morning, but it was unclear if the thefts were related.
