COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — An Iraqi refugee accused of critically wounding a Colorado Springs police officer has been charged with attempted murder.
The Gazette reports that prosecutors filed eight counts in all Thursday against 31-year-old Karrar Noaman Al Khammasi in the Aug. 2 shooting of Officer Cem Duzel.
Police say Duzel is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
He was wounded while responding to a call of shots fired near the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Al Khammasi is being held in El Paso County jail. He did not speak at Thursday's appearance and a court-appointed attorney waived a reading of the charges against him.
The Department of Homeland Security says Al Khamassi arrived in the United States in 2012. Records suggest he has lived in Colorado for at least five years.
